It's Charlie Winston here, sending you a personal end-of-year message. Ha ha!
And what another crazy year it's been.
Starting
the year off with the tour of Zeniths in France was certainly going out
with a bang. When I first released Hobo, I didn't expect to be playing
to my own audiences of 7,000 so soon. It was a buzz to have such a big
show and I have loved the experience of doing it. However, I have to be
honest with you and say that my heart is still playing in the smaller
clubs. Between 500 - 1,000 people is my favorite size to play to. I can
see all the people and build a faster rapport with everyone during the
show until the whole room goes ballistic. That's my kind of show. And
that was confirmed to me by just doing the last two tours in Germany and
Canada. The venues were the perfect size and the public were fantastic,
(as they have been every where we have played in the last two years).
The promotion of my record Hobo is now officially over, and it felt like
the perfect ending to it - coming back to the small clubs and needing
to win audiences over, as we had the opportunity to do in Canada, thanks
you Bedouin Soundclash.
Yes... I said it - I have finished
promoting my debut record. It feels like the right time, (to put it
lightly). It has had an incredible life span and reached so may people I
am more than happy for the success it's had, but now is most definitely
a good time to put it to bed and wake up some new music. I have been
writing as much as I can in the moments that I have had. On the road, I
have been throwing new songs at the band and there is a good feeling of
excitement about what we can create in the studio. I cannot say what the
next record will be like. I have no intention of it being like the last
one, or with any false hopes of it reaching the same success. All I
hope is that it will have just as much of me in it, making absolutely no
attempts to be or sound anything like anyone but myself. That is the
greatest challenge, especially these days, when the age of recorded
music has grown up so much, carrying with it such a expansive and
colourful history. But as long as I know what I do is honest, I'll know
that I am on the right track, and that's what I am looking forward to.
So,
next year will find me focusing, most importantly, on that. During the
Hobo campaign, new connections were made in new countries, where we hope
to release the next record, so a lot of next year will be taken up
preparing for it's release in all of the territories in a much more
concentrated way than before, as they didn't know me before and I had to
do a lot more work to present myself. This time, I'll be covering a lot
more ground in short spaces of time, or at least, that's the plan so
far, but we'll see... anything can happen. Speaking of which, I intend
for many things to happen, not related to my next record. I have other
little projects and plans on the boil, which I am currently writing a
wish list for - I do it and the start of every year - that's how things
begin. So, should I be doing anything that I think you'll be interested
in I shall let you know. I certainly don't intend to desert you!
